“Trans-Southeast Asia (T-SEAsia)” is a collective that encompasses all the eleven Southeast Asian countries, as well as regions of East and South Asia, including Southern China, that border on the former. These countries and regions, which sit amongst the tropical and sub-tropical peninsulas and archipelagos that sprinkle the southeast areas of Asia in the north hemisphere, are knit closely together now and before.

More than the toned-down geographical boundary, “trans” as a concept inclines towards expanding art and knowledge production and opening up the curatorial process in response to the vibrancy in the art scene in this region. This dynamic process will decentralize the power structure of exhibitions for co-ownership among a variety of curators, artists, art projects and researchers, leading to a series of research programs, exhibitions and publications. During the process of the Triennial, participants work together, just like the ancient populace who dwell afloat and co-live with the tides in this areas, to navigate the world of uncertainty and explore the wisdom to co-habit with it.

Trans-Southeast Asia Triennial starts from the close geographical kinship between Guangdong and Southeast Asia. Guangzhou opened its port more than 2000 years ago. Both in retrospect and at present, it tops its Chinese siblings in the frequency and intricacy of exchanging and interacting with Southeast Asia. The Guangdong-based GAFA Art Museum commits itself to the cultural and art research spanning from the Pearl River Delta and Southern China to Southeast Asia and beyond, with the Trans-SEAsia Triennial series as a research platform. Missioned to bolster the communication in art and thinking in Trans-Southeast Asia with an open curatorial perspective and new art museum practice, this triennial shall support cultural self-knowledge, understanding and innovation within the region via unconventional exhibitions, discussions, archive building, publication and other public programs. It takes the situation of Trans-Southeast Asia being hemmed in by various blocs of power as the point of departure to reflect on its art practice that also situates along multiple marginalized discourses to unravel the multiple perspectives and narratives of contemporary art making in this area.

The theme of the First T-SEAsian Triennial 2021 correlates with the complex history and diverse cultures particular to this region. Its broadly scattered peninsulas and archipelagos forestall any possibility for them to close themselves up for a tranquil journey. The looming threats posed by the typhoon and tsunami, all in flux, weave uncertainty into the everyday fabrics, compelling the habitants to “take uncertainty as a certainty” in assuring their own existence.

Durian, an indigenously grown fruit, is famed for its plentiful variety, so much so that one same tree can give birth to vastly different fruity offspring. The pulp sits around the center inside the shell, with no beauty of symmetry and often isolated from each other. The durian shell, with its forbidding and solid look, breathes trouble and dread down our neck. Yet the fruit itself is rife with a tempting smack, shown in its olfactory aggressiveness and exceptionally sweet and tender pulp. The production, consumption and transportation of durian cross lines of culture, society and environment. How have we visualized and misinterpreted durian? Living in the pandemic world, everydayness shows unusual meanings, and the diversity and complexity durian carries are also magnified, paralleling our multiple online and offline realities. What new perceptions and insights do we need to live with durian, and to change old habits, rethinking the position, privilege, rights and creativity in our work?

This announcement inaugurates the presentation and sharing of research and exhibition preparation so far. Shaped together with various participants, the First T-SEAsia Triennial 2021 aims to build a perennial exchange and research platform for the pluralistic and open knowledge production and dialogue in this region, with rewarding crossovers among various disciplines, perspectives, pathways and methodologies.

The Triennial is working as a research platform to investigate and to present the art practice, history and present contexts in collaboration with collaborative researchers, enacting dialogues between art projects, various communities and institutions among Southeast Asia and Southern China. The open research team welcomes applications from researchers of all fields to work on related themes of the Triennial.

Throughout the duration of the Triennial, a series of exhibitions, workshops and other public events will be staged across multiple online and offline sites, as a result of long-term research and site-specific collaborations facilitated by the Triennial.

At a later stage of the Triennial, all work will be revisited and reconstructed in the museum site to form new ways of conversations and dissemination, through a gathering exhibition.
