Since 1987, Soichiro Fukutake, chairman of the board of Fubu Foundation, began to carry out an activity called "Benesse Art Site Naoshima" (BASN), which revitalized the islands with modern art in the Seto Inland Sea, including Naoshima, Teshima, and Inujima. Fukutake is also the general producer of the Setouchi Triennale, and he is working with the famous curator Fram Kitagawa to promote the "Restoration of the Sea" and the resurgence of the rural areas. Over the past three decades, the islands have been reinvigorated by the placement of modern art into a once-designated national park area that is now depressing.
Today, Fukutake lives in New Zealand, but continues to focus on and participate in projects to revitalize the Seto Inland Sea islands and other rural arts. Since 2017, he has been invited to serve as an advisor for the Taohua Island Art Revitalization Rural Project in Shandong Province, China, to help revitalize the local area with the experience of "Naoshima Method".
